The Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Standards (VICS) Association is a non-profit organization that was responsible for the development and implementation of widely-accepted industry standards aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the supply chain. Established in 1986, VICS sought to facilitate communication and collaboration between retailers, suppliers, and other supply chain partners by creating a common language and standards for conducting business.

Purpose and Role: The primary goal of the VICS Association was to streamline the supply chain by promoting the adoption of standardized practices and processes across the retail and consumer goods industries. By doing so, the organization aimed to reduce costs, improve communication, and enhance overall supply chain performance for its members and the industry.

Components:

  • Standard development: VICS was responsible for creating, maintaining, and updating industry standards, including the VICS EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) standards, which defined the format and structure of electronic business documents for exchanging information between supply chain partners.
  • Collaboration: The organization facilitated collaboration between members, including retailers, suppliers, and other supply chain partners, to address common challenges and identify best practices.
  • Education and training: VICS provided education and training resources to help its members understand and implement the standards, as well as to stay informed about industry trends and developments.

Importance: The VICS Association played an important role in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the supply chain within the retail and consumer goods industries. By developing and promoting the adoption of standardized practices and processes, the organization helped reduce costs, enhance communication, and streamline operations for its members and the industry.

Note: As of 2013, VICS has merged with the GS1 US, a member of the global GS1 organization that develops and maintains supply chain standards across various industries. GS1 US continues to support and promote using the VICS EDI standards and other supply chain best practices, building upon the foundation established by the VICS Association.
