What are Support Activities?
Support activities are those activities that support the value-creating activities of a business. In the context of business strategy, value-creating activities are those activities that directly contribute to the creation of a product or service that is offered to customers. Support activities, on the other hand, are those activities that do not directly contribute to the creation of the product or service, but are necessary for the value-creating activities to be carried out effectively.
There are three main categories of support activities:
- Firm infrastructure: This includes activities such as general management, accounting, and legal services, which provide the underlying infrastructure that enables a business to function.
- Human resource management: This includes activities such as recruiting, training, and performance management, which help a business to attract, develop, and retain the talent it needs to be successful.
- Technology development: This includes activities such as research and development, which help a business to innovate and create new products or services.
Support activities play a crucial role in the success of a business, as they help to ensure that the value-creating activities of the business are carried out efficiently and effectively.
